IN THE CLASSROOM

HASS: Migration

Students interview a first generation migrant member of their family or community to explore the push / pull reasons why people migrate, through the eyes of the migrant and as a class we will identify ways to support migrants in their assimilation.

Students are required to submit their interview transcript with notes, and a newspaper article created on Canva profiling the experience of their interviewee.
Exemplars and resources are on OneNote, Content Library, HASS - as well as a video of a 'modelled' interview with my dad, Malik Mascarenhas a migrant from Sri Lanka.

Please support your child with:

 1. Identifying a first generation migrant - most are interviewing parents or grandparents, but a few students are unclear if certain people in their family circle are migrants or not. You may know a migrant in your workplace, or a friend who wouldn't mind being interviewed. Alternatively, your child can interview Father Archie or Mrs Meyer's mother-in-law, who will be guests in our class in the coming week, to share their migrant stories.

2. The migrant does not have to be someone who has fled a war, or is a refugee, but it could be someone who has decided to migrate to Australia by choice, for marriage or work opportunities.

3. Recording the interview on your phone / ipad. Most children do not know shorthand, and can't write as quickly as the interviewee speaks.

4. I have provided a bank of interview questions to the children as a scaffold, but please prompt them in creating some of their own questions too, as the interview progresses.

Grandparents Day

We will celebrate Grandparents Day on Friday, the 3rd of November (Week 4), so please make sure that your child has taken the time to invite their grandparents along if possible.
We will start at 9.00am with a 1K assembly.
Grandparents can then go into classrooms for activities from 9.30-10.40am and to look at their grandchild's work.
At 10:40am, they will have an opportunity to share morning tea with their grandchildren in the undercover area.

Calendar Art

I've had feedback that there is an error with the link to order art. Admin are working on resolving this, please contact Mrs Marrell or Mrs Reilly in the office if you are still having issues.

Thank you for your ongoing support, have a lovely weekend,

Warmly,
